The Jewish Council is once again organising a gathering for Tashlich, and we invite our community to join us. All are welcome.
Since the Middle Ages, Jewish people have gathered during the New Year period for Tashlich. In this ritual we meet at a body of water to symbolically cast away our wrongdoings and prepare for the year to come. This year, we will be meeting on the second day of Rosh HaShanah (The Jewish New Year).
This gathering will also be an opportunity to hear the shofar, the rams horn trumpet that the Torah commands Jews to hear during this period. The sounding of the shofar jolts us out of the everyday and reminds us of our commitments and values.
With these collective acts we renew our resolve to conduct ourselves with care, compassion and justice.
- Bread crumbs are traditionally cast into the water as symbols of past wrongdoing, but we ask that you bring a pebble or petal instead.
- Please also bring a picnic blanket and some snacks if you want to join us for informal conversation after the conclusion of the ritual.
- Please purchase a ticket for a friend or family member and bring them along.
- The location will be in the CBD, and shared on the day of the event.
- Funds raised from tickets and donations will be donated to Olive Kids, a Palestinian-Australian charity which supports Palestinian children. Tzedakah - giving - is central to Jewish cultural and religious life, and Tashlich is an important time to reaffirm this.
Our traditions direct us to pursue justice, and we hope that you will join us in doing this for Tashlich 5787.
